The Greek Society for Music Education (G.S.M.E.) after the recent announcements of the Ministry of Education about the New Curriculum for Secondary Education notes:
Music Education is an integral part of the education of young people from ancient times until today. The benefits of educating young students through the prism of musical science are numerous and scientifically documented. The psychophysical development and social integration of the student through music have been proven through countless scientific research and teaching music is considered granted in all countries of the world, for all the above reasons.
The "recommended" New Curriculum repeals and negates all the above parameters, providing a public school that does not take account of the completion and smooth integration of young people in society.
G.S.M.E. opposes the proposal of the Ministry of Education to degrade music teaching in Secondary Education.
Greece, although in a crisis, a year ago-through G.S.M.E. - hosted successfully the world's largest event in Music Education, 30th World Congress of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) cannot degrade Music Education thereby.
In an effort to avoid this downgrading, along with our voices and the voices of all Greek organizations, associations and scientific societies, will unite the voices of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the UNESCO-under which ISME works-and the International Music Council (IMC).
We ask, therefore, the Ministry of Education not only to set aside immediately the forthcoming proposal, but also to ensure that music education will be developed further as it deserves in our country and not to degrade it.
